Therapy dogs provide comfort, affection, and emotional support to various different populations. They visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other facilities to spread joy and uplift people's spirits.
Therapy dogs are owned by an individual, but together, they share their dog with the community. Yes, you can pet the dogs!
-
No, therapy dogs are not the same as service dogs. While therapy dogs serve the community, service dogs are individually training to perform specific tasks and assist people with disabilities. Service dogs are typically working directly with their owner and provide very specific support to them. Examples include guide dogs to help vision-impaired individuals navigate, hearing or signal dogs to alert hearing-impaired individuals, or mobility assistance dogs to support those with physical limitations.
Service dogs often wear a vest asking that the public does not pet them as they are focused on doing their job for their owner.
-
No. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) provide therapeutic benefits to their handlers through companionship, often helping individuals with emotional or psychological conditions to feel comforted and calm. They are not trained to perform a specific job or task, which makes them different from Service Dogs.

Each certifying body for therapy dogs has different requirements, but here are some common themes.
Basic Manners and Friendliness:
Therapy dogs need to be well-mannered and friendly. They should enjoy meeting new people and be comfortable in various social settings.
Obedience Training:
While not mandatory, formal obedience training can be very helpful. It teaches dogs basic commands and good behavior, which are essential for therapy work.
Health Standards:
Therapy dogs must be healthy, up-to-date on vaccinations, and have a recent negative fecal exam. This ensures they are safe to interact with people, especially those in vulnerable health conditions.
Calm Temperament:
A calm and gentle nature is crucial for therapy dogs. They should be able to handle different environments and situations without getting stressed or aggressive.
Certification Process:
Organizations like the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) offer certification tests. These tests evaluate the dog’s behavior, social skills, and ability to provide comfort and support. They also evaluate the owner's abilities to support and lead the dog throughout various environments. Often, a written test is required of the owner.
Age Requirement:
Dogs must be at least one year old to be certified as therapy dogs. This ensures they have the maturity needed for therapy work.
